Dining

Local cooking is Fijian and Indian. International food is also available. Table service is normal, although some places offer buffet-style food at lunchtime. Only licensed restaurants, clubs and hotel bars can serve alcohol.
  • The legal drinking age is 18.
  • Tipping is unnecessary or only small amounts for special services.

National specialties

  • Kakoda (a marinated local fish steamed in coconut cream and lime).
  • Rourou (a taro leaf dish).
  • Kassaua (tapioca, often boiled, baked or grated and cooked in coconut cream with sugar and mashed bananas).
  • Duruka (an unusual asparagus-like vegetable in season during April and May).
  • Lovo (feast of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit cooked in covered pits).

National drinks

  • Kava (traditionally prepared by virgins, who chewed the root of the pepper plant into a soft pulpy mass before adding water).
  • Carlton (a local beer brewed in Suva).
  • Fiji Bitter (brewed in Lautoka).
  • Meridan Moselle and Suvanna Moselle (local wines).
  • Booth’s Gin, Bounty Fiji Golden Rum, Cossack Vodka and Old Club Whisky (produced by South Pacific Distilleries).

Nightlife

Major Hotels and resorts offer live bands, dancing and Fiji entertainment the biggest range of evening entertainment is in Suva – Victoria Parade is lined with restaurants, nightclubs and bars. Movie theatres are found throughout the islands and show both English-language and Bollywood films.

Shopping

Favourite buys are filigree jewellery, woodcarvings (such as kava bowls), polished coconut shells, woven work (such as mats, coasters, hats, fans and trays), tapa cloth and pearls. Bargaining is not the norm in shops. Some shopkeepers will give a discount with large purchases. Duty-free items are available and include electrical goods, pewter, crystal and porcelain.

Activities

Nadi

There is a wide array of natural and cultural attractions and activities for the Nadi region. Tours for this region are the most diversified and accessible. Departing from Nadi, they range from daily aerial sightseeing tours of the beautiful Mamanuca Islands, the more remote Yasawa Group and the Nausori Highlands inland from Nadi.

Island hopping from Nadi via the Denarau Marina is another popular tourist day trip. These are mainly to the Mamanuca Islands to resorts and to smaller islands which cater specially for day-trippers. Activities include parasailing, jet skies, banana boat rides and coral viewing on glass-bottom boats. For the more sedate, or romantic, schooners also depart from Denarau to beautiful uninhabited islands in the Mamanucas

Suva

The Fiji Museum

The Fiji Museum was founded in 1904 and houses some of the best-kept collection of Fijian artefacts that trace back history more than 100 years. The Museum is located in the Thruton Gardens and is open six days a week from 09:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Saturdays.

Colo-I-Suva

Located in the hills on the outskirts of Suva, this forest park is located about 11 kilometres from downtown Suva city. Great for walking and trekking through the forest filled with mahogany trees. Open seven days a week from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Fiji Spice Gardens

Located in Wainadoi, about a half hour drive from Suva city, the spice gardens grow as well as sell spices such as vanilla, cardamom and nutmeg.

Botanical Garden

Otherwise known as Thruston Garden, spectacular for its flora and fauna that is unique to the South Pacific region.

Shopping

Suva has a variety of retail shops that sell clothes, jewellery, shoes and hand-crafted souvenirs at bargain prices. The back streets of Suva – Cumming or Marks Street are the centre of small, retail traders that sell clothes and shoes and you can walk into a tailor shop, pick a material and have this sewn in less than 24 hours to any pattern or design you wish. Other shopping outlets include Jacks of Fiji, Prouds at Suva Central Complex, Harbour Terminal Building, Tappoos Fiji, Pure Fiji factory, Downtown Boulevard, Parade Archade, Mid-City Mall and Sports City. The Handicraft Centre is where you can view basket or mat weaving and the Suva Market where you can find fresh farm and seafood produce.

Festivals/Carnivals

Suva hold annual events which include the Hibiscus Festival, usually held in August, the Showcase held around July, Suva on Sale held once a year also and the ROC market help every Sunday where a group of people come in and sell crafts and paintings.

City Sights

Suva offers a number historical buildings that are home to many businesses today. Coral Sun Fiji offers a ‘Suva Heritage Tour’ in and around the capital with highlights of historical landmarks. The three and a half hour tour runs from Monday to Friday at 9:30am and at 2:00pm.
Suva City highlights include:
  • Fiji’s Government House and Parliament Complex.
  • Sukuna and Albert Park.
  • Fiji Bitter (brewed in Lautoka).
  • Old Grand Pacific Hotel Building.
  • Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Coral Coast

Take a tour up Sigatoka valley and visit the ‘Naihehe Cave’ where the remains of a ritual platform and cannibal oven still exist or visit the ‘Biausevu’ waterfall. Visit the famous pottery villages of Lawai and Nakabuta to see how pottery was first made in Fiji, without the use of a potter’s wheel.

Coral Coast Scenic Railway

The Coral Coast Scenic Railway offers a ride along the coast on an old sugar train that runs through villages, sugar plantations, forests and coastal areas to Natadola beach.

Day Spas

Many of the resorts on the Coral Coast now feature day spas and wellness centres and a full range of therapies both traditional and modern are available.

Golf

Some of the resorts on the Coral Coast have golf courses for amateurs and experts alike.

Heritage Sites

The ‘Sigatoka Sand Dunes’ are Fiji’s first national park. The shifting sands and archaeological digs continue to reveal a unique sample of ancient Fijian civilizations – skeletons (dating back to 250 AD) and pottery artefacts which give vital clues to the first inhabitants of Fiji. The visitor’s centre will explain the exhibits and provide guided tours to this truly outstanding natural wonder. Sand-boarding down the sand dunes is also a popular activity.

Kula Eco Park

Kula Eco Park is Fiji’s only wildlife park. Set in the tropical forest with wooden walkways rambling along a bubbling stream, the park is a showcase of Fiji’s flora and fauna. The park conducts captive breeding of some of Fiji’s rarest endangered species and provides free hands-on environmental education to Fiji’s school children. Your visit supports the cost of running these programmes and you’ll have the chance to be photographed with iguanas, musk parrots, snakes and more. You can help feed the sea turtles and spend as long as you like gazing at the wondrous marine display of coral and fish. Holding the Excellece in Tourism award no less than 5 times, Kula Eco Park is a world class facility.

Scuba Diving

Fiji is well known for its diverse underwater beauty and marine life, and is famous for its scuba diving. Here on the Coral Coast we also have the added advantage in having many of Fiji’s greatest dive sites and most are within 15 minutes by boat. The fringing reef that stretches the whole length of the Coral Coast has walls, passages, swim throughs and fantastic fish; marine life abounds on the coral reef. The reef offers sites with both hard and soft corals and huge variety of tropical fish. Turtles, sharks and rays are also regular visitors. As there is no noticeable current, the sites are great for all levels of experienced divers and are also a fantastic place to learn to scuba dive.

Sigatoka River Safari

An action-packed jet boat adventure up Sigatoka River, the longest river on Viti Levu surrounded by lush green backdrops and spectacular cliffs. The river safari includes a visit to a Fijian village with cultural performances
